Once considered a sept of Clan Mactavish, Clan Thompson is a clan in its own right. The earliest known appearance of Clan Thompson dates back to the Thompsons of Eskdale, known for their fearsome border reivers. They were infamous for raiding the border regions between England and Scotland. Although not related by blood, the clans share one tartan: Thompson Red Modern.
